Being Blind to Change

There is a phenomenon known as change blindness from which we all suffer. What typically happens is that if we are looking at a situation and a change is introduced into that situation we usually do not recognize it. That means that we have decided that we know what we are looking at, or in some cases, looking for, and since we do not anticipate any change we do not recognize it when it happens. This also occurs when we are focused on something. We cannot consciously take in all the details as we selectively focus on what interests us, so when changes do occur we are oblivious to them.

This phenomenon suggests that we perceive what we choose to perceive rather than what might be a new opportunity arising.

Being open to change, and welcoming change, as a general attitude is essential to recognize changes and the opportunities they bring. Every change that occurs presents one or more opportunities.

Every change is the ending of something and the beginning of something else. When something ends see it as the ending of something beautiful. Then when something else begins see it as something beautiful beginning. In the space between, let go!

Because change is always happening and we benefit by being aware of what changes are occurring we can make it a habit to frequently ask ourselves: What is different about this situation from previously? Or, how is this relationship changing? Then ask: what are the new opportunities being presented to me
