Justice
Justice
is a quality that relates to actions and attitudes that are right or
lawful. When applied to personal relationships, what is considered just
relates to having one’s own rights respected and honoured. It also
implies being right or correct. So if someone does something that we
feel is disrespectful of us or does not conform to what we see as the
right thing to do, we can easily feel offended or upset. We can feel
that our rights or stature has been assaulted in some way.
Legal
justice is the application of human laws that are enacted in a society
to help keep human relationships functioning on an equitable level. The
creating of civil and criminal laws attempts to enforce ethical
behaviour and respect for others’ lives and property. However, the legal
systems in the modern world are often inadequate in administering true
justice because of the existence of many legal loopholes that block the
spirit of the law.
True
justice is based on universal laws that are inherent in our nature – our
soul nature. In a deeper sense what is truly unjust is what contradicts
universal law. This level of justice involves true equity where all
individuals are valued and seen as having a purpose for the good of the
whole. A just society is one in which everyone’s rights are respected
and a person’s potentials for contribution are empowered.
Universal
laws always are intelligent, loving and empowering because they exist at
a soul level within ourselves and within life. Therefore when something
is done that contradicts intelligence, love and empowerment, it feels
wrong. It is experienced as a violation of the integrity and even
sacredness of someone’s life. Law is what keeps order. Universal law is
what keeps universal order, which implies that everyone and everything
has a place and purpose, as well as a contribution to make. When someone
is out of order they not only do not make a valued contribution, but
also interfere in the order of other people’s lives. This feels unjust,
something that just should not be.
When we
experience what we consider to be unjust we have a responsibility to
address the situation appropriately. This means connecting with soul
rather than reacting from a feeling of offence in which we act either
defensively or with condemnation.

Exercises:
1. Examine your attitudes toward others. Do you ever seek
revenge or punishment when offended?
2. Do you support others to fulfill their potentials? That
is, do you empower others to make a valued contribution to
family or society?
3. How do you address with love and understanding issues of
injustice? |
