The Law of Beauty
The Law
of Beauty is a universal or natural law, which means that it is a cause
that always produces the same effect. Every time that we perceive
something that we recognize as beautiful, we experience joy. Even if the
perception is on the level of personality, it will evoke joy because no
matter what level the beauty is on it touches our heart.
Beauty is
the basis of love. We only love what we perceive as beautiful.
The soul
is the monitor of the quality of our lives. The sensitivity toward
quality that we have is found within the soul because the soul is
unitive which we experience as all positive. When we develop negative
habits or expose ourselves repeatedly to negative images and words, we
block our soul sensitivity from functioning because we are focused
within illusion. When we are first exposed to something negative,
harmful or objectionable it grates against our sense of what we
intuitively know to be true or real.
The
sensitivity of the soul, although active toward all things in life, is
basically a sensitivity toward beauty – the inherent beauty in all
things. When we dull this sensitivity through vulgarity, manipulation,
viewing violent images and repeated negative thoughts and words, we
incapacitate ourselves from being able to respond to beauty. Beauty is
the inherent attractiveness of the essence of something, whereas
negativity is what repulses or repels the beauty from one’s perception.
This
self-injury is very significant because when we cannot respond to true
beauty we cannot love because love is a response to what we perceive as
beautiful, and is a movement toward uniting with it. So what then
replaces beauty as a stimulus is something that appeals to our lower
nature – such as something that we desire or something that gives us a
rush of adrenaline. In other words, rather than responding to the beauty
that we encounter, we try to satisfy ourselves and call that love.
The
allure of beauty is the awareness that everything is part of something
else, that it is a significant part of a greater whole such as society
or the environment or humanity. It is the soul within, the custodian and
embodiment of beauty that gives rise to this sensitivity.
If we do
not spontaneously recognize the presence of Beauty, we can do some
things to try to connect with the Beauty that is in fact present. Here
are some suggestions:
1.
Acknowledge the presence of Essential Divinity, and attempt to connect
with it.
2. Perceive the person, situation or thing as a part of a greater whole,
and a meaningful part of all of life.
3. See the reality as a teacher.
4. Recognize the reality as a unique expression of Spirit.
5. See the reality as a part of your greater Self that you do not yet
know.
6. Discover the underlying Truth.
7. Appreciate its uniqueness.
8. See its value in life rather than its value for you.
9. Experience it as a heart opener.

Exercises:
Take time to practice the perception of beauty. This is much
easier to do in a meditative state because then you do not rely
on your physical senses. Practice focusing on: a thing, a
situation, a person, your self, a life. Stay with the focus
until you experience the beauty. Be aware of subtle judgments,
preconceived ideas and projections that might get in the way.
Become aware of what you feel in your heart. |
