Standing For Something
Every
single day of our life, no matter what is happening, we need to accept
or create a challenge for ourselves. Only through challenges
successfully taken do we take steps toward soul- personality
integration. Furthermore, it is only through creating and tackling
challenges that we keep learning and growing our brain.
When we
are challenged our typical first reaction is resistance. Resistance
takes forms such as stubbornness, fear, denial, anger, rejection, blame,
indifference, etc.
We often
feel the need to stand up for ourselves when we are faced with a
challenge or with something we do not want to accept. In attempting to
do so, we frequently make a mistake. The mistake is that we usually
stand against whatever it is we don’t want to accept or against someone
we do not want to embrace.
This kind
of stance creates tension within ourselves, and often irritation or
stress. This consequence is nature’s way of telling us that there is a
better way of standing up for oneself, which is to stand for something
rather than against something. When challenged, irritated or repelled by
someone or something ask yourself what it is that you need to stand for.
It must be something positive or of value. And then stand for it.
Challenges are meant to turn you inward to your place of authenticity so
that you can then respond from a genuine place of true identity which is
the soul within you. If you cannot rise to the soul level in your
response, at least attempt to respond from a consciously kind,
intelligent and appropriate place.
When you
do this habitually you begin to move away from being a victim to taking
responsibility for your experiences. When you don’t do this you feel
that circumstances and other people do things to you or cause you to
react the way you do. With this feeling then you immediately get into a
defensive stance or an aggressive stance against whatever it is that
challenges you.

Exercises:
1. When first challenged, hold your mind in abeyance. Have
the intention to meet every challenge with soul (love,
understanding, empowerment, etc.) Don’t put a label or judgment
on yourself or another – because that creates an obstacle to
soul – e.g., I am afraid; I feel shame; you are aggressive, etc.
This judgement will make you defensive or aggressive.
2. Determine what value or quality is needed at the moment,
and stand for that in a loving, positive, courageous way. |
